Better Presenting
How to give great presentations
Presenting your research effectively to a broad audience is an essential career skill, no matter what career stage you are in. Yet, most professional scientists receive little formal training in effective communication. For this reason, my colleague Rob Coyne and I worked together to produce a workshop titled 'How To Give Great Presentations: A Scientist’s Guide to Effective Communication' which runs annually at the winter meetings of the American Astronomical Society.
We have created a handout with tips and tricks to help you design and deliver great presentations, which you can download here
Heading to a conference? Download the Great Presentations Bingo and the Great Posters Bingo and see how many squares you can check off! This is a really helpful excercise to train yourself to spot good (and not so good!) elements of posters/presentations, which in turn makes you a better presenter.
Giving a virtual talk? Grab the Quick Start Guide and the Pre Talk checklist to help you get everything ready.
And finally, some timeless advice! A lot of what is said in this 1973 paper by Robert Geroch on giving talks, still hold true today! It's a quick read, and definitely worth your time.
